Calming animals with sound: PetCare sound therapy

Animals too are sensitive to sound. From the veterinary clinic to the shelter and the farm, animal sound therapy (PetCare) is emerging as a simple, non-invasive tool to reduce stress and improve well-being.

Sound, a universal language of calm

As in humans, a stable, soothing sound environment triggers relaxation responses in animals: slower heart rate, reduced anxiety behaviours. Several dog studies have shown that calm music (classical, reggae or soft rock depending on the study) lowered stress signs in kennels.

Concrete uses

  • Veterinary clinic: reducing anxiety before a consultation or surgery
  • Shelters and kennels: calming animals in noisy, stressful environments
  • Transport: limiting stress during travel
  • Livestock: improving comfort and, potentially, productivity

Adapting sound to the species

Caution: animal hearing differs from ours. Dogs and cats perceive higher frequencies, horses are sensitive to low tones. Music specifically composed for each species is starting to appear, accounting for their hearing range and physiological rhythm.

An endearing field, where the science of sound serves our companions.
