Tinnitus: which evidence-based sound therapies?

Tinnitus — perceiving a sound with no external source — affects a notable share of adults. While there is no universal « cure », several sound approaches help reduce its impact.

The principle of sound enrichment

Introducing a soft external sound (coloured noise, nature sounds, music) aims to reduce the contrast between tinnitus and silence, and to facilitate habituation — a process by which the brain gradually stops attending to the intrusive signal.

TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy)

It combines structured counselling (explaining mechanisms, deconstructing anxiety) with prolonged sound therapy. Evidence suggests benefit on perceived distress, especially when psychological support is strong. The educational component seems at least as important as the sound itself.

Combined approaches

  • CBT + sound therapy: cognitive behavioural therapy remains the best-supported intervention for tinnitus-related distress
  • Hearing aids: with associated hearing loss, they often reduce tinnitus
  • Personalised sounds: tailored to the frequency profile, under evaluation

What syntheses show

Systematic reviews conclude that sound therapy alone has modest, variable effects, but real value within comprehensive care combining education, stress management and, if needed, hearing correction. The goal is not to remove tinnitus, but to reduce its impact on quality of life.

Any persistent discomfort warrants an ENT consultation: sound therapy complements professional assessment and follow-up.
